Justin Santos – Why Ethical Porn?

What is ethical porn? Not everyone agrees on a singular definition, but at Joybear we think ‘ethical porn’ encompasses everything you don’t see on screen. In other words, ethical porn isn’t just a marketing term; it’s an approach to business that happens before the cameras are even rolling. This includes, but is not limited to: complete transparency and communication to ensure everyone’s understanding and consent; the opportunity for performers to ask any questions relating to the script and/or any aspect of filming (not just the sex either!); the opportunity for performers to communicate what they want and enjoy sexually as well as what they do not want;

the measures taken to ensure the well-being of everyone on set; the choice for all performers to use condoms (or any other protection from STIs); officially obtained STI tests that have been shared with all relevant parties prior to filming; making sure performers know they are in control and can ask to stop at any time; checking in with performers throughout the shoot to maintain affirmative consent; quality catering and plenty of water available; fair and equitable pay; and above all, a positive working atmosphere where performers feel safe and valued.

These above items are the elements that typically comprise ‘ethical porn’ for us—and it’s worth noting that these items are also nothing more than common sense and good business practice! At JoyBear we believe that beautifully produced ethical porn is not only “possible,” but also it should be the standard—why do business any other way?

Especially as the consumer base for porn grows (to increasingly include more women), it only makes sense that the audience wants to see greater inclusivity and more “substance” and genuine pleasure. This means ethical porn is often quite different from formulaic mainstream scenes. Ethical porn studios also generally feature a variety of genders, body types, races, and sexual orientations in their productions.

At Joybear, the sex we film always aims to capture genuine chemistry and pleasure happening between two adults—it’s definitely not a race to the “moneyshot.” Additionally, we want our audience to see the performers not as mere sex objects, but as human beings. We love doing fun behind-the-scenes snippets and interviews. There’s always a story within the creation of the story–and we want to show you that too.
