Ethical Porn Sites

Not everyone agrees on a singular definition, but at Joybear Pictures we think ‘ethical porn’ encompasses everything you don’t see on screen. In other words, ethical porn isn’t just a marketing term; it’s an approach to business that happens before the cameras are even rolling. This includes, but is not limited to: complete transparency and communication to ensure everyone’s understanding and consent; the opportunity for performers to…

As I define it, ethical porn centers on trust, honest communication, safety, and fair dealing among all parties involved. While it doesn’t end there, ethical porn starts with the relationship between directors, producers, and performers. At Sssh.com, we’ve established very clear on-set policies in which the performer always has final say on what takes place and how. Really, it’s all about respect and consent and a mutual exchange of both between everyone involved in the creative process.

At Pink and White Productions, we believe that being an ethical porn producer means respecting our cast and crew, the people we work with and the city we work in, as well as the people who purchase our content. There are a number of ways we strive to do this, balancing transparency, communication, and business policy. We don’t believe ‘ethical porn’ is a static identity or an adult film genre, but rather a best business (and life) practice which we can all work and aspire towards.

For me, the concept of ethical porn encompasses three areas: how it is created, how it is presented to the audience, and how it is consumed. Ethical porn emphasizes consent, respect for performers, sex positivity and good working conditions. It also encourages paying for porn. Ethical work practices are incredibly important in the creation of good porn. This means paying performers properly, collaborating on scenes, establishing and respecting boundaries and being transparent about processes. Consent must be made explicit, both between the performers themselves and also in the final product.

Ensuring that ethical, sexual pornography can be easily found by consumers is critical. It not only creates a safer work environment for performers, but also allows the consumer to play an active role in the transformation of the community’s sexual health. Content that is produced and consumed ethically is the answer to so many problems society has with regards to pornography.

To me, ethical porn concerns the process more than the final product. Ethical porn is first and foremost consensual, where no performer is ever pressured to do something they don’t want to do, where performers’ opinions are heard and respected. An ethical set is safe, friendly, respectful and as comfortable as possible for cast and crew.

We see an assumption, particularly in feminist discourse, that so-called “mainstream” porn is inevitably unethical, and that the visual tropes of it (particularly regarding the appearance of female performers) and the standard formulae of sex acts, are innately “degrading” — and, by implication, unethical. The truth is that the ethics of porn are more complicated than that. It’s perfectly possible to produce mainstream, Silicon-valley porn in an ethical way; and some porn that brands itself as “ethical” or “feminist” is produced in a way that exploits its performers. For me, working conditions are the bottom line. The ethics of porn aren’t measured in aesthetics, but in labour rights.

I do not believe anyone intends to be unethical…It’s a matter of owning our shortcomings and being willing to sacrifice a little to provide an ethical work space. If this means spending a tired evening emailing and DM’ing with models to communicate properly about upcoming bookings when we really just want to lay down, so be it. If this means making a little less profit because a model is vegan and can’t eat pizza on set, so be it. If this means missing an update because we can’t find a model who’s limits meet our shoot needs, so be it. Doing the right thing sometimes requires work. Unethical behavior is normally a product of laziness.

It’s important to have an open dialog. As a performer/filmmaker I try to put myself in the performer’s position when I’m in the filmmaker position and think about their experience from the moment they step on set until the day the finished film is in their hands.

Ethical porn is a series of workplace practices that we engage with to uphold ethical standards across the production process. In terms of the practical application during pre-production, we do a lot of ground work with performers to create a framework for ensuring communication is open. We actively collaborate with individuals for their own scenes to make sure it is not only something that they consent to, but also feel is right for them.

Ethical porn to me is porn that is created in a way that respects all people involved in the production – in front of and behind the camera. It is created in a  “fair-trade” way, meaning nobody taking part in this production was taken advantage of and everyone was treated fairly, having their (sexual) boundaries respected, being given choices, receiving fair payment and enjoying pleasant work conditions. The welfare and happiness of the performers matter to an ethical porn producer and performers are encouraged to have an input into their scenes.
