If you keep up with any form of social media or pop culture, you’ve probably heard of the Cardi B/Candace Owens drama being reported across various news outlets. Whether you enjoy her songs like “WAP” or “Bodak Yellow”, we’ve got to hand it to the rapper for her courage and conviction in standing up for and defending what she believes in with a strong “live and let live” mindset.

20 Seconds to Catch You Up

In the past, Cardi B has been quick to defend stars like Lizzo for an emotional breakdown in response to hateful comments, Zaya Wade against anti-trans attacks, and Will Smith against various claims in the media, among others. The well-known rapper does not try to hide behind her fame, but rather uses her platform as a way to promote kindness and tolerance between people no matter their own personal beliefs.

Most recently, Cardi B is voicing her opinion against the anti-porn movement after political commentator, Candace Owens, called pornography a “psychological weapon intended to weaken our men” via a post on social media. According to Candace, pornography is bad, men who watch porn are victims, and anyone who defends or profits from porn should be stigmatized. Owens has built her career on frequently changing her views on various topics and believes that all porn should be permanently banned to prevent men from becoming “depraved.”

Back to the Helpers

Before you roll your eyes too hard and end up seeing your own brain stem, let’s take a moment to remind ourselves of something Mr. Rogers taught us from his mom: Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.

With this in mind, let’s circle back to the people who are advocating for peaceful and tolerant relationships, freedom of expression, and being your own authentic self as long as it doesn’t harm others. Cardi B states she only watches pornography, maybe, 6 times a year and it does not replace intimacy, but it should actually teach men how to please a woman.

Cardi B isn’t the only advocate or supporter of sex workers. Celebrities like Scarlett Johansson and Taylor Momsen have both stated that porn can be enjoyable for both men and women. Other celebrities, such as Cameron Diaz and Kanye West, also support the idea that porn should be legally available for adults to purchase.

Getting the Facts

While the Cardi B/Candace Owens interaction is certainly not the first and definitely not the last in a long string of pornography debates, it’s important to get the facts on porn before following the negative stories being plastered across most major media outlets. Read up on the interviews by sex workers who enjoy creating ethical porn and support the adult industry. Focus on the differences in porn today versus the negative aspects of porn 50 years ago when “ethical porn” was a pipe dream for models.

The adult industry is a tight-knit, fun community that accepts each other in a way most industries don’t. When unhappy people outside the community get loud, we must remember to show our support for each other, demonstrating to the world that ethical porn is an amazing form of entertainment, regardless of ones personal taste in sex. Let’s remind the world that there is an ethical and responsible way to enjoy the most carnal forms of entertainment without limiting the freedoms of those around us. We can all be helpers, in our own way.
