“At a glance, the topic of ethics and porn seem like a complete oxymoron moron. Too many people porn is inherently unethical and to define ethical usually means that the term is used in respect to upholding morals or standards or codes of conduct, so it makes sense that to some people porn is outside of that and they are totally entitled to that opinion.

In my personal opinion, you can’t really define morality in clear-cut boxes. It would be great if we could, but it’s not so quick and easy. It’s not what you do, but how you do it. When it comes to a personal relationship, a romantic relationship, or a working relationship – ethics is really the intention you enter that environment with and into that situation with. An ethical intention is one where I treat this person or these people with respect, dignity, I’m going to communicate any issues so that we can all work things out. So we can all be equally happy about what’s going on here.

To me, that’s an ethical situation and again that can apply to a work situation, to filming pornography, to having a conversation. It’s a quality of interaction as opposed to a categorical one.

Inherent in that is the understanding that, in my opinion, human beings are not perfect, and being ethical does not mean you are perfect or that nothing ever goes wrong. If that were the case, we would never be shooting anything. It means that when we come to shoot porn, with the idea that we are shooting human beings they are as comfortable and as happy as possible. So that you watching at come can be as comfortable and happy as possible. Then that means that we are going, to be honest, we are going to communicate and if something comes up we are going to handle the situation in a way that is best for everyone. That might mean continuing to shoot, that might mean changing up what we’re doing, in some cases, it might even means calling off the shoot altogether.

It’s not about what we are producing, the outcome “oh my god we made porn” it’s about what goes on behind the scenes when the camera is not rolling to create something that you [the consumer] can feel good about watching at home.

Now when we are talking about ethics in porn, usually two kinds of topics come up one is consent and the other one is pleasure. These are actually two opposing things. So consent is “are you willing to do these acts” and pleasure is “do you like it”. Now, this is complicated though, because we can consent to things we don’t enjoy. We also sometimes enjoy things we didn’t consent to but I would argue you can have an ethical porn production that is consensual, but not pleasurable but you cannot have one that is pleasurable but not consensual because we always have to be talking and in communication about what’s going on. So in the ideal world, to produce the best content you are going to have both…”
