How to Spot Ethically Made Porn

We recently reached out to three interesting members of the adult industry (and Ethical.porn contributors) to weigh in on something a little tricky — how to spot ethically made porn, for civilians.

Jiz Lee, Casey Calvert, and Dee Severe all had interesting things to add to a list we developed based on several parameters that seem to be emerging as key, according to Ethical.porn contributors.

“Ethical porn is not just the stereotypical soft, female-focused, romantic content… Any kind of content, from the softest glamour solo to the hardest roughest scene, can be produced both ethically and unethically. It’s important for you to seek out ethically-produced content in whatever genre you enjoy watching.” — Casey Calvert

Things to look for include:

1. Consent: This is a pretty obvious dimension, and Calvert drew attention to the idea of content that appears non-consensual — but actually is!

2. Workplace Transparency: Was everyone, from performers to crew, prepped regarding set objectives? Dee Severe drew attention to the significance of getting qualified people on set as well.

3. Good Business Practices

4. Non-consensual erotic content — often referred to as “revenge porn” — is not porn. For this reason, and so many others, it’s not ethical porn.

5. Is the porn you are watching *exactly* your taste? This doesn’t matter! Porn, like the rest of life, takes all kinds. Not all sexual proclivities must align for them to be ethical.

6. Did consumers do their due diligence and view content ethically? In other words, did you pay for your porn?

“‘Ethical porn’ is what you pay for,” Lee explained.

“This includes tube sites,” Calvert added, “which do their best to masquerade as ethical. They are not.”
