Emily Prior — Why Ethical Porn?

By Emily E. Prior, MA

Coming from a positive sexuality perspective, ethics are an inherent and necessary part of healthy sexual interaction. Ethics are usually considered a standard of care, wherein professionals or others take differing perspectives and needs under consideration.

From an ethical porn perspective, this has very little to do with the content itself (to each her own!) but with the standards around the production of the content. Are workers being treated with respect by their coworkers, producers, etc.? Are they being paid according to current standards? Is there discrimination based on gender, age, race/ethnicity, etc.? This is where ethics come in. People should be treated with respect, regardless of who they are, and what they do.
